Course Description

As a member of CIUTI, the world’s oldest and most prestigious international association of university institutes with translation programmes, we’ve designed this vocational course to enable the start or advancement of a career in translation. You’ll have the opportunity to study specialist translation areas including law, politics, medicine, business, IT, media, subtitling and localisation. The programme is accredited through its main translation project by the Chartered Institute of Linguistics (CIOL) and includes work placement opportunities to give you a head start in your career.

In the most recent Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) survey, 100% of all 2017 graduates from this course were in work or further study within six months.

The Translation MA degree is a member of the Conférence Internationale Permanente d’Instituts Universitaires de Traducteurs et Interprètes (CIUTI), an international association of universities and institutes with translation and interpretation programmes. The course has been specifically designed to enable the start or advancement of a career in translation. The course is open to qualified graduates and translators seeking a professional qualification in specialised translation to enhance their career.

This course offers a wide range of language combinations paired with English, such as Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.

Entry Requirements

You will be required to have:

  • a first degree at 2:1 or above in translation, interpreting, modern languages or a related field (applications from candidates with a second class degree or from non-language-based disciplines will be considered but an entry test may be required, applicants with substantial work experience in translation but no first degree will also be considered)
  • native knowledge of a mother language
  • near-native proficiency in the first foreign language
  • good command of the second foreign language (if applicable)

The following documents are also required to support the application:

  • two references, one of which must be an academic reference
  • a first degree certificate and mark transcript

Student Destinations

This course will prepare you for roles in translation agencies, EU and international institutions, multinational companies, news corporations or government bodies.

Graduates of this course have become freelance translators or language teachers at secondary school level. Some graduates also go on to further advanced study with a PhD.
