Modules:

Module 1: IS7 114 – Theoretical Perspectives on Work Based Learning

The content of this module is intended to equip the WBL Facilitator with a sound understanding of theoretical perspectives which underpin WBL and offer justification for its place in the curriculum, identifying the distinctive characteristics of WBL in Higher Education settings. This module aims to increase the knowledge and understanding of WBL facilitators in the following key areas:

• Philosophical perspectives on WBL
• Psychological perspectives on WBL
• Pedagogical perspectives on WBL

Module 2: IS7 115 – Higher Education Frameworks for Negotiated Work Based Learning, Credit and Acquired Prior Learning

This is the second module of a suite of three modules that leads to the postgraduate award. This module can provide a useful learning opportunity for those wishing to engage with quality assurance, credit, acquired prior learning (APL) and work based learning (WBL) in Higher Education (HE) more generally. The specific content of this module includes:

• Quality control and quality assurance of programmes of WBL
• Frameworks for academic credit and qualifications
• Principles of modularisation

• The genesis and ethos of negotiated WBL
• Personal audits and negotiated learning
• Potential learning opportunities in negotiated WBL frameworks
• Learning pathways and learning agreements
• Accreditation of prior learning (APCL and APEL)
• Practical facilitation of APL claims
• Negotiated WBL frameworks compared

Module 3: IS7 116 – Facilitation and Assessment in Work Based Learning

This is the final module of a suite of three modules that lead to the postgraduate award. This module is designed to equip a participant with a skill base which will allow them to deploy a range of facilitation, learning and assessing methodologies when supporting students. The concepts and models of facilitation, teaching, learning and assessment will underpin this module. Participants will be expected to understand the complexities of facilitation of students in a higher education and work based learning context.

The module is divided into two core topic areas:

• Facilitating the learning of work-based students
• Assessing the learning of work-based students

Specific module content includes:

• Understanding yourself as a facilitator of learning
• Linking learning, teaching and assessing in higher education and work based learning
• Developing new and existing approaches and techniques in facilitating learning
• Designing innovative assessment for the work based/related learner
• Evaluating your facilitating approaches and practices

Programme Structure:

Students will be expected to attend 3 x day workshops which will be supported by some online resources.
