MA Applied Linguistics

Course Description

This programme will equip you with technical and advanced expertise in how human language works and how it is used in specific real-life settings, with implications for interpersonal relationships, business interactions and effective communication in various in-person, online, and tech-mediated contexts. You will be introduced to diverse applications of linguistics beyond professions that are explicitly linked to language, including in speech and language therapy for children and adults with communication disorders, criminal investigations and courtrooms, the entertainment industry, IT, education and teaching, healthcare, and professional workplaces, providing you with practical and theoretical knowledge as well as sought-after transferable skills.

  • Explore major developments in sociolinguistic thought around language and its embedding in society
  • Opportunity to work as a Research Assistant on one of the department’s ongoing research projects and/or to take part in a Research Practicum with one of our private or public sector partners
  • Gain hands-on training in conducting advanced linguistics research

Entry Requirements

A 2:1 or above at undergraduate level in Linguistics or a relevant subject such as Sociology, Cultural or Media Studies, Language Teaching.

Student Destinations

The aim of this programme is to produce well-trained linguists capable of going on to begin a PhD in Linguistics or a related field and/or to take employment in a field in which linguistics plays an important part. This includes the real-world settings of healthcare and clinical contexts, speech and language therapy, law and courtrooms, journalism and the media, and social media and digital communication.

The programme covers a range of practical and knowledge-transfer components which will support students in building collaborations and networking with industry partners and recognize the applicability of training in  linguistics to their career prospects outside the higher education sector.
