Course Description

The Master of Science Programme in Environmental Management and Sustainability Science at Aalborg University, Denmark, is directed at science and engineering students who are interested in topics related to sustainability and environmental management.

The degree offered is Master of Science in Engineering in Environmental Management & Sustainability Science.

The programme is designed to meet these new challenges, by integrating inputs from the social and human sciences into the study of planning and engineering. The focus is on how firms, governments, and other organisations can support sustainable development in an economically efficient and socially acceptable manner.

Aim

The aim of the programme is to provide you with an understanding of the leading theories and practical experiences within environmental management and sustainability. The programme enables you to define and solve environmentally related problems in the business world as well as in public organisations and the broader society.

You will work with questions like

  • What can you do to reduce the environmental strains of electronic products?
  • How can you, in an enterprise, use environmental management to reduce environmental and climatic strains?
  • How can we secure a sustainable development in an interplay with public authorities?
  • How can technology changes be carried through so that we secure a sustainable development?

Entry Requirements

To enter this master programme you must have a relevant bachelor degree. The bachelor in Urban, Energy and Environmental Planning at Aalborg University gives you direct access to the programme. Other relevant bachelor degrees could be within engineering, geography, politics or social science. However all applications for the master programme are evaluated individually and the relevancy of the bachelor degree is evaluated through this process.

You can study as a guest student at the first and/or second semester or as a master student following the entire two-year degree programme.

Students seeking to enrol in the programme must have the following qualifications:

  • A bachelor of science degree in engineering, geography or natural sciences.

  • Documented working knowledge of written and spoken English (verified IELTS score report with a minimum score of 6.5, TOEFL (paper based) 550, TOEFL (computer based) 230, TOEFL (internet based): 80 or Cambridge ESOL: C1.

Module Details

The Master of Science Programme in Environmental Management & Sustainability Science combines a theoretical orientation with practical project work. This means that you achieve hands-on experience with a range of practical techniques in areas like

  • environmental planning
  • environmental policy
  • environmental management systems (EMS)
  • corporate social responsibility
  • life cycle assessment (LCA)
  • energy analysis and planning.

You will be able to use different tools for project design, environmental monitoring, quality control and evaluation as well as planning. Furthermore, you will be trained in using cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness methods.

The programme will also provide you with an understanding of the social and political implications of planning and management within the environmental field. This includes an understanding of the relationships between companies and stakeholders, the environmental challenges facing businesses operating on international markets, and an introduction to various types of environmental regulations.

The courses and the project work are carried out in English. Therefore, the programme is open to Danish as well as international students with a relevant Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or equivalent.
