Course Description

The MA Degree in Globalization Studies and Cultural Diplomacy with a Concentration on International Relations is offered by the University of Bucharest in partnership with the Academy for Cultural Diplomacy.



The program consists of 120 ECTS credits in total and has a duration of four semesters, which take place in both Berlin, Germany and Bucharest, Romania. The first two semesters of the program are hosted by the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy in Berlin and the third and the fourth semesters are hosted by the University of Bucharest.



The degree focuses on several academic disciplines related to International Relations & Economics, Global Politics and Cultural Diplomacy, with a particular emphasis on the theories of globalization as well as its historical evolution, which will be examined with a special emphasis upon cultural diplomacy and its historical and contemporary application within the context of a contemporary globalized world. The degree prepares students for careers in diverse fields, such as the field of international relations, the humanities, politics and culture, with a special focus on the main agents of globalization and the application of Cultural Diplomacy in the framework of global governance and international organizations.

The core curriculum of the program provides a thorough background and analysis of the most significant theories and practices within the fields of Globalization, International Relations/Politics/Economics and Cultural Diplomacy, using a historical and case study approach.



The general structure of the program is available below:

 

Semester 1 (30 Credits)

(Center for Cultural Diplomacy Studies; Berlin, Germany)



The first semester in Berlin begins with a Preliminary Studies and Orientation component to prepare students for their academic graduate program. The main priority of the curriculum for the first semester is to provide students with a solid foundation and understanding of the history of Cultural Diplomacy, the contemporary practice of Cultural Diplomacy and the future applications of Cultural Diplomacy. 



Mandatory Courses for Semester One are:

  • The History and Evolution of the Field of Cultural Diplomacy
  • International Case Studies of Cultural Diplomacy
  • Future Trends in International Relations and Cultural Diplomacy

Elective Courses for Semester One (two of which each student must select), include:



  • Nation Branding and Unilateral Cultural Diplomacy
  • Contemporary German Foreign Policy
  • International Organizations
  • European Politics

Semester 2 (30 Credits)

(Center for Cultural Diplomacy Studies; Berlin, Germany)



During the second semester, students will undertake a professional development and training program at the Center for Cultural Diplomacy Studies in Berlin, through which each student will be able to apply in practice what they learned in theory in the first semester. The semester will provide students with valuable professional experience and contacts in the fields that they plan to work in after the MA and can greatly improve students’ chances of acquiring their preferred career.



Elective Courses for Semester Two (two of which each student must select), include:

  • Models of Cultural Diplomacy
  • Religion and Cultural Diplomacy
  • Soft Power, Hard Power, and Smart Power
  • Cultural Diplomacy in Conflict Zones
  • The Private Sector and Cultural Diplomacy

Semester 3 (30 Credits)

(University of Bucharest; Bucharest, Romania)



Following three semesters of academic study, students will be qualified to write an in-depth analysis, in the form of a final thesis, on a topic of their choice related to the theme of the program. Students are required to complete a Master’s dissertation during their fourth semester of study and will be provided with guidance on how to choose an appropriate topic and how to identify and locate the relevant sources. The topic, structure, and length of each dissertation will be subject to individual review and faculty mentor approval. The students will be asked to defend their dissertation before a panel of faculty members prior to receiving a final grade.



In addition to writing the Master’s dissertation, students will be required to take four developmental workshop courses, which will guide them in the completion of their thesis.

  • Theories of International Relations
  • Resources and Development in the Global Word

Elective Courses for Semester Three (two of which each student must select), include:

  • Cultural and Intercultural Communication
  • Cultural Change and Human Rights
  • Writing and Argumentation Methods

Semester 4 (30 Credits)

Following three semesters of academic study, students will be qualified to write an in-depth analysis, in the form of a final thesis, on a topic of their choice related to the theme of the program.
