The MA in European Languages and Global Cultures is designed to appeal to a wide range of suitable graduates. It is a part-time programme with a high degree of flexibility, usually completed in two or three years and is accessible for students from beyond the local area and to those with professional or other commitments.
The programme combines the study of a major European language – French, German or Spanish – and the examination of related cultures.
Students will apply research skills to the acquisition of in-depth knowledge and understanding of cultural identities and manifestations within their political and historical contexts.
The core modules provide a solid basis for the scholarly appraisal of significant aspects of the development of identities and cultures, whilst the dissertation provides an opportunity for the detailed examination of an area which is of particular interest to each student.
This in an innovative programme providing a balanced combination of language study, and an in-depth examination of essential elements of cultural identities.
The programme is delivered by a highly committed team of tutors with extensive experience in global cultural studies and in the language areas taught. Teaching methods consist of lectures, language workshops, tutorials and action learning groups.
Weekend Sessions
Delivery of the programme combines intensive one-day weekend sessions on campus and directed independent study with online support. There are eight one-day sessions, on Saturdays, spread across the year between October and June.
E-learning
Online tutorial support and opportunities for online discussion, for which students will need to be suitably equipped at home, complement the face-to-face sessions.
Students will normally be required to have a good honours degree (strong 2:2 or higher) in Chinese Studies, French, German or Spanish or in one of those languages combined with another discipline. All applicants to the course will be interviewed to assess their linguistic ability and discuss their research interests.
