While this course covers all aspects of digital design and manufacturing, it centres around 3D printing – also known as additive manufacturing. Designed for students with backgrounds in engineering, digital and creative disciplines, this masters equips you with the knowledge and skills to take on high-level roles in Industry 4.0 and contribute to its future research and development.
Additive manufacturing offers unprecedented design freedom, enabling the creation of geometrically complex objects that traditional methods can’t achieve. From plastics to concrete, you’ll explore a wide range of materials, examining both established and emerging 3D printing technologies to create innovative, functional designs.
As modern society expects better products made with fewer resources, you’ll explore the circular economy and learn how to optimise your designs for sustainability through full product lifecycle evaluation.
You’ll gain hands-on experience in digital modelling, design, and evaluation, adopting a ‘fail-fast, fail-often’ learning approach to quickly refine your ideas. You’ll prototype and test your ideas using our suite of advanced 3D printers, including:
Stereolithography (SLA)
Fused filament fabrication (FFF)
Continuous fibre fabrication (CFF)
Digital light processing (DLP)
Multi-jet fusion (MJF)
You’ll also master 3D scanning techniques to capture the shape and texture of real-world objects and environments, then process and transform this data into accurate digital models or replacement parts through additive manufacturing.
This future-focused course blends creativity with cutting-edge technology, giving you the tools to push boundaries in design and manufacturing. Whether you want to innovate in established industries or shape emerging ones, you’ll graduate ready to make a lasting impact.
You’ll need a minimum of 2:2 in a UK honours degree that contains laboratory or practical components. Examples of relevant degree subjects include engineering, product design and technology, computing and digital technology, graphic design, fashion design and technology, and interior design.
Applicants who don’t meet these criteria will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Other professional qualifications or degree disciplines will be considered on merit and/ or with relevant professional experience. We may interview you as part of your application.
Overseas applicants will require IELTS with an overall score of 6.5 with no less than 5.5 in any category, or an equivalent accepted English qualification. Accepted English qualifications can be viewed here.
