Early Years Initial Teacher Training: Graduate Entry Route

Course Description

Working as an early years teacher is a rewarding and challenging career and you can make a real difference to young children’s development and life chances. This full time 12 month training programme is designed for graduates who wish to specialise in early childhood development and lead education and care for children from birth to five years.

This is intensive five day a week course will allow you to develop your teaching and learning practice with babies, toddlers and young children. During your studies, you will spend a minimum of 120 days on placement in at least two early years settings. You will also be able to have a short placement with children aged 5-7 years to support your understanding of children’s learning as they progress through primary school. University based training sessions take place one day a week to allow for reflective and collaborative learning.

As an Early Years ITT Graduate Entry trainee you will work towards Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS) by demonstrating the Teachers’ Standards (Early Years). To enhance your progress towards achieving EYTS, you are also eligible to enrol on the Professional Practice in Early Years Foundation Stage Teaching which enables you to gain 60 credits at Masters Level.

Entry Requirements

You will need to hold a first degree (Level 6) from a UK higher education institution or equivalent qualificationDegrees in all subjects are consideredYou must have achieved GCSE grade C in English, Mathematics and a Science subjectWe also accept equivalency tests by Equivalency Testing, A Start Teachers or any other appropriately accredited provider. We cannot accept functional skills or key skills.Further requirementsYou are required to have two weeks work experience in an early years setting in the UK before you start the programme and ideally before you come for interview. To begin the training programme you must also complete a satisfactory DBS check and an Occupational Health check. Further details will be sent to you once you have accepted our offer.EligibilityOnly UK students and overseas students who are entitled to work and study in the UK or hold a visa which covers the full training period are eligible to apply for this course.Interviews, entrance tests, portfolios and auditionsAt the interview stage, your suitability for teaching will be judged, including your subject knowledge for teaching and potential to demonstrate proficiency with fundamental English and mathematics. If any shortfall is identified, you may be required to complete some additional work before starting the programme. During the programme, your subject knowledge and fundamental English and mathematics will be developed and assessed to ensure you reach the required level.
