Course Description

On this exciting two-year course, you’ll have a unique opportunity to study the latest educational research and gain professional work experience within an educational organisation or setting through a work placement.

MA Education has Placement Year, a one-year course option and Advanced Research pathway.

The work placement takes place in the second year of the course and is normally unpaid. During this year, you will be supported by our Placement Team to identify and apply for year-long placement opportunities that reflect the skills and knowledge you have gained. You will have access to contacts through our extensive network of partnership schools and local educational organisations however placement cannot be guaranteed.

Students on the MA Education (with Placement Year) who are unable to secure an appropriate work placement can transfer on to the Advanced Research pathway in the second year. We also have a one-year course available.

You will develop and deepen your knowledge and understanding of educational theory and practice through critical reflection, analysis and enquiry, benefiting from a supportive learning community and learning from lecturers and professionals from a range of educational settings. The course will equip you with skills in critical thinking, enquiry and research, report writing, presentation and communication as well as the application of theory to practice.

  • Guest lectures from specialists across all areas of education
  • Opportunities to visit a range of educational settings, including special schools and alternative education provision
  • Work experience or placement and networking opportunities in Hertfordshire and London thanks to the University’s excellent location.

Entry Requirements

  • An honours degree (2:2 or higher) in a relevant subject such as Education, SEND, Childhood Studies, Social Sciences, Coaching, Mentoring or Counselling or other related fields. Other degree qualifications will be considered depending upon relevant professional experience in an educational context such as schools and colleges. Overseas awards need to be recognised as equivalent by NARIC
  • English language GCSE Grade 4 (iGCSE Grade C) or above or equivalent
  • a short personal statement (no more than 500 words) explaining why you are interested in education and any relevant experience (professional or voluntary) that might support your application
  • a work or academic reference.
