    MA: 3 years part-time

Course Description

Special Education Needs (SEN) and how they are addressed in schools is changing. We are confident that you will have seen for yourself the benefit and positive changes that can be realised when focusing on inclusion in schools instead of labelling pupils and moving them to segregated classes. In order to improve outcomes for your students you will need to increase your expertise in SEN and effectively work with your colleagues and influence your peers to promote inclusion in your school. Our course is flexible and practical and examines a wide range of issues including leadership and management, diversity, detailed SEN issues, curricula and assessment. Regardless of whether you have worked in SEN for years or you are just starting out, this course will help you achieve your goals to improve children’s lives and education. We encourage teachers to examine and consider SEN as a vital part of the entire school environment in order to allow your pupils to flourish.

Module Details

This module is designed to improve the effectiveness of your teaching and increase the positive impact on the outcomes of the children and young people you teach. It is focused on the development of policy and practice in the area of Special Educational Needs and inclusion.

You will learn to successfully research the impact of personal practice on children’s and young people’s outcomes. You will apply these skills in a professional context and undertake a small scale critical enquiry.

After you complete this module your skills, awareness and understanding of how the leadership and management functions and practice in schools relate to the achievement of outcomes for children and young people and staff will be substantially improved.

This is an opportunity to develop your knowledge and understanding of a range of inclusion issues; examples could include English as an Additional Language (EAL), gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties (EBD) and other areas of Special Education Needs (SEN).

You will learn to embed your professional attributes, knowledge, understanding and skills needed into your practice. As a result you will be able to critically analyse a range of sources of evidence in order to improve your curricula.

This module is designed to develop your ability to appraise recent research and enquiry into theories of learning and teaching, develop a critical understanding of the role of assessment and to use classroom data effectively to inform personalised learning pathways for pupils.

You will complete an independent action research project to examine an issue in your practice, come up with solutions, test those solutions and then examine the outcome to see if the issue has been successfully resolved.
