Entry Requirements

You should have an honour’s degree of 2.2 classification or above in a health or social care-related subject or in leadership or management. Applicants with other qualifications and experience may be able to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) if they can provide evidence of their ability to study at master’s level. Such applicants will be invited to discuss their experiences and abilities with the course leader. Applicants whose first language is not English will need to satisfy the English Language requirements, which are a minimum overall score of IELTS 6.5.Basic digital literacy skills are required. Students should have the ability to use Microsoft Office applications (or equivalent) and have access to a PC with a reliable internet connection, webcam and microphone. Induction activities in the first week of the course will provide instruction on navigating our system.

Learn how evidence-based tools and techniques improve the reliability and safety of everyday healthcare systems and processes. You are introduced to the key concepts of human factors science and consider the contemporary healthcare landscape, particularly the safety culture. Critically explore the concept of patient harm and its impact on individuals, teams and the organisation. Develop academic skills for postgraduate study, including searching electronic databases and evaluating evidence.

Learning From Patient Safety Events

Explore the strategies and techniques that help healthcare staff effectively learn from patient safety events in line with The Patient Safety Incident Response Framework. You look at the underpinning contributory factors of similar events so the review can identify relevant and robust actions to prevent subsequent similar events. Investigate the influence of organisational culture and psychological safety, learning methods to create and sustain high-quality, safe and effective care for local communities.

Legal and Ethical Issues in Leadership

You develop a comprehensive and critical understanding of knowledge in relation to the legal and ethical aspects of leadership. Key theories related to safeguarding, liability, governance, due diligence and whistleblowing are addressed.

Managing the Human Dimension of Change

Develop your knowledge and understanding of the human dimension of change. Consider why change can falter or fail, and examine at the skills, behaviours and approaches to managing it. Enhance your abilities in coaching conversations and oral presentation. You are encouraged to use a global mindset, make ethical decisions and apply social intelligence, intellectual flexibility and political astuteness when considering how change is implemented.
