Course Description

Our course is ideal if you are interested in physical education in its broadest terms, particularly if you are already working in the field within schools and youth sport and seek to further your professional development and career potential. We will help to enhance your understanding of physical education as a lifelong process.

You will develop a critical understanding of contemporary curriculum practice in physical education and school sport, as well as critically assess the role of different pedagogical models in teaching physical education and school sport. 

Entry Requirements

Applicants should either have at least a second class honours degree in the cognate subjects of Physical Education or Sport, at least a second class honours degree in a non-cognate subject supported by evidence of an aptitude for the subject applied for, or have equivalent experience or training, normally from within the work environment. All applications should be supported by a reference, either academic or professional; all applicants should satisfy our University English language requirements. 
IELTS 6.0 with no skills below 5.5, or an equivalent qualification. The University provides excellent support for any applicant who may be required to undertake additional English language courses.

Explore the ways PE and youth sport are taught and assessed, focussing on issues such as competitive sport, PE as a way of keeping students fit, teaching games for understanding and PE as an examinable subject.

Draw on child development theory to assess the experiences of young people in PE and sport. You will examine various knowledge bases, considering the challenges of conducting research about young people.

Examine diversity and inequality from a social science perspective. You will consider specific examples of legal discrimination and how they relate to sport, law, leisure and physical education professions.

Designed to prepare you for your major independent study, you’ll focus on research methods and ethics to aid you in your own study.

Undertake a major independent study into an area of your personal interest, relevant to the Physical Education course.
