UWE Bristol has been approved to offer the online iQTS (International Qualified Teacher Status) course. This is a new UK government-backed international teaching qualification which meets the same high standards as English Qualified Teacher Status and also leads to the award of QTS.

From September 2023, UWE Bristol will deliver online iQTS with PGCE in Primary, and Secondary Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. The University is highly experienced in teacher education and has been training teachers for over 70 years.

All of the University’s Initial Teacher Education courses were awarded a ‘Good’ rating in 2022 from the regulator, Ofsted.  In addition to this, UWE Bristol is in the top 15% of new universities (Times HE Young University rankings, 2022) and is 22nd in the UK for student satisfaction (Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey, 2022).

Students need to be working in a school alongside their studies and will practice and evaluate different teaching and learning strategies during their course.

Mandy Lee, Head of Department for Education and Childhood, said:

“We have considerable expertise in delivering online courses. In particular, we know how important it is to get to know our students well, wherever they’re studying.

We pride ourselves on our close support for students and our commitment to connecting students with each other. Our cohort groups will become part of a wonderful community of practice and will share experiences and ideas with each other as well as with their tutors.”

The iQTS course is suitable for non-UK and UK citizens living outside England. It aims to make high quality teacher training accessible around the world. Applicants can be new or experienced teachers and can be used by schools to upskill their educators with an internationally valued teaching qualification.

The course intends to:

  • Make high quality training accessible around the world and allow students to benefit from evidence-based training.
  • Support schools outside the UK to recruit, retain and develop local talent.
  • Increase the global pool of quality teachers and support global mobility within the teaching profession.
