Walid Al Mashaleh – The level of hands-on experience I’m gaining on this course is unique

Walid’s experience of a Master’s hasn’t just set him up for professional success – it’s also taught him more about himself.

After graduating with a BSc (Hons) Cyber Security and Computer Forensics, I wanted to learn and explore more about cyber security. The School of Computing at Portsmouth is really good and I wanted to be with the best. So, I applied for my Master’s.

The course has helped me deepen my understanding and knowledge of topics from my undergraduate degree. Most of the modules are lab-oriented and I think the level of hands-on experience I’m gaining on this course is unique.

Exchanging knowledge and stories

I’m developing great technical skills and knowledge. But most importantly, I feel ready for the real world. The networking I’ve done and the connections I’ve made at the University are a big reason for that.

I’ve learned that is so important, because exchanging knowledge and stories with other people can help you find opportunities.

Learning more about myself

I have learned how to be independent, got into new hobbies and travelled to new places.

The support I received from everyone at the University before, during and after joining was great. It felt welcoming. Besides being a Master’s student, I have become an ambassador for the University, doing all sorts of marketing for them.

To anyone wondering about Master’s study, I say go for it! It may seem daunting at first, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll make memories that will last a lifetime.

My goals from here are to get a job, secure my Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) qualification and go on to become a Chief Information Security Officer.
